G. OSHA - Stairways and Ladders: OSHA 3124-12R.
H. SSPC-Paint 15 - Steel Joist Shop Primer; Society for Protective Coatings.
I. SSPC-SP 2 - Hand Tool Cleaning; Society for Protective Coatings.
1.04 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Field Measurements: Verify actual locations of walls and other construction contiguous with metal
fabrications by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings:
1. Established Dimensions: Where field measurements cannot be made without delaying the Work,
establish dimensions and proceed with fabricating metal fabrications without field measurements.
Coordinate wall and other contiguous construction to ensure that actual dimensions correspond to
established dimensions.
1.05 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate installation of anchorages for metal fabrications. Furnish setting drawings, templates, and
directions for installing anchorages, including sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor bolts and items with
integral anchors that are to be embedded in concrete. Deliver such items to Project site in time for
installation.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 MATERIALS - STEEL

B. Steel Angles, Plates and Channels: ASTM A 36/A 36M.
C. Steel W Shapes and Tees: ASTM A 992/A 992M.
D. Steel Tubing: ASTM A 500, Grade B cold-formed structural tubing.
E. Plates: ASTM A 283.
F. Pipe: ASTM A 53/A 53M, Grade B Schedule 40, black finish.
G. Stainless Steel: ASTM A666, Type 304 at interiors, Type 316 at exteriors.
H. Bolts, Nuts and Washers: ASTM A 325/A 325M), Type 1, galvanized to ASTM A 153/A 153M where
connecting galvanized components.
I. Welding Materials: AWS D1.1/D1.1M; type required for materials being welded.
J. Welding Fittings: Factory- or shop-welded from matching pipe or tube; seams continuously welded; joints
and seams ground smooth.
K. Shop and Touch-Up Primer: SSPC-Paint 15, complying with VOC limitations of authorities having
jurisdiction.

L. Touch-Up Primer for Galvanized Surfaces: SSPC-Paint 20, Type I - Inorganic, complying with VOC
limitations of authorities having jurisdiction.
2.02 FABRICATION
A. General: Fabricate metal fabrications to comply with requirements indicated for design, dimensions,
member sizes and spacing, details, finish and anchorage; but not less than that required to support
structural loads.
B. Coordinate dimensions and attachment methods of formed-metal fabrications with those of adjoining
construction to produce integrated assemblies with closely fitting joints and with edges and surfaces
aligned, unless otherwise indicated.
C. Fabricate items with joints tightly fitted and secured.
D. Cut, drill and punch metals cleanly and accurately. Remove burrs and ease edges to a radius of
approximately 1/32 inch. Remove sharp or rough areas on exposed surfaces.
E. Continuously seal joined members by continuous welds or intermittent welds and plastic filler.
F. Exposed Mechanical Fastenings: Flush countersunk screws or bolts; unobtrusively located; consistent
with design of component, except where specifically noted otherwise.
G. Welded Connections: Cope components at connections to provide close fit, or use fittings designed for
this purpose. Weld all around at connections, including at fittings. Weld corners and seams continuously
where visible or where exposed to moisture, even if intermittent or stitch welds are structurally adequate,
and to comply with the following:
1. Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and corrosion resistance
of base metals.
2. Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.
3. Remove welding flux immediately.
4. At continuous joints visible in the finished work provide continuous welds even though intermittent
or “stitch” welds are structurally adequate.
5. At exposed connections, finish exposed welds and surfaces smooth and blended so no roughness
shows after finishing and contour of welded surface matches adjacent surface.
H. Supply components required for anchorage of fabrications. Fabricate anchors and related components of
same material and finish as fabrication, except where specifically noted otherwise.
2.03 FINISHES - STEEL
A. Prepare surfaces to be primed in accordance with SSPC-SP2. Clean surfaces of rust, scale, grease and
foreign matter prior to finishing.
B. Prime Painting: As defined in Section 09 90 00 - Paint; safety yellow.
C. Galvanizing of Steel Members: Galvanize after fabrication to ASTM A 123 requirements.
2.04 FABRICATION TOLERANCES
A. Squareness: 1/8 inch maximum difference in diagonal measurements.
B. Maximum Offset between Faces: 1/16 inch.
C. Maximum Misalignment of Adjacent Members: 1/16 inch.
D. Maximum Bow: 1/8 inch in 48 inches.
E. Maximum Deviation from Plane: 1/16 inch in 48 inches.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that field conditions are acceptable and are ready to receive work.
3.02 PREPARATION
A. Clean and strip primed steel items to bare metal and aluminum where site welding is required.
B. Supply setting templates to the appropriate entities for steel items required to be cast into concrete or
embedded in masonry.
3.03 INSTALLATION
A. Install items plumb and level, accurately fitted, free from distortion or defects.
B. Provide for erection loads, and for sufficient temporary bracing to maintain true alignment until completion
of erection and installation of permanent attachments.
C. Field weld components indicated on shop drawings.

E. Obtain approval prior to site cutting or making adjustments not scheduled.
F. After erection, prime welds, abrasions and surfaces not shop primed or galvanized, except surfaces to be
in contact with concrete.
3.04 TOLERANCES
A. Maximum Variation from Plumb: 1/4 inch.
B. Maximum Offset from True Alignment: 1/4 inch.
