Support for the Elk Run Energy Station 0
Dear Mayor, Council, and Commissioners:
On behalf of the Amana Society Service Company,this letter represents our support for the
proposed Elk Run Energy Station,
As an investor owned electric utility, our fundamental objective is to provide our community
with reliable,economical electric energy. We believe that the Elk Run Energy Station will assist
us in achieving this goal_
Currently,we participate with 28 other Iowa public and private organisations through a joint
action agency to obtain electric energy for our citizens through purchased power agreements
from suppliers in the upper Midwest. Most of this energy is generated in central.and southern
Illinois and delivered to us in Amara by a regional transmission.provider. This arrangement
provides us with an ample supply of electric energy;however, we look forward to the various
benefits derived from the proposed efficient, new coal-fired generation unit,Elk Rain.Energy
Station. The addition of new coal-fired capacity in Iowa can allow older, less-efficient and more
polluting coal-fired plants to be de-commissioned
The generation produced by this unit will increase the power supply options available to us
through our joint action agency. This will make the electric energy market more competitive and
ultimately,have a positive impact on future electric energy prices. Affordable electric energy
will assist in the effort to attract new economic development and keep our community thriving
for years to come.
