Members present: Cole, Jones, Schmitt, Lind Morrissey, Welper, and Hart.
Objective: Annual Legislature Update
State Representative District 59 Bob Kresick, Senator Bill Dotzler, State Representative District
20 Walt Rodgers, and Senator Jeff Danielson introduced themselves and explained the areas they
serve. They each reviewed the issues they feel will be discussed during the upcoming legislative
session.
Mayor Clark questioned the panel on holding to the commitment of funding the MPFRSI 411
pension from the State and asked if there would be support to expand the 657 legislation to
include commercial structures.
Senator Danielson reported that a bill has been drafted and will be taken to the Senate. Rep.
Kresick explained that he would have supported the bill but it was not taken to the House.
Senator Dotzler noted that he would have supported it as well. Rep. Rodgers explained that he
does not believe it will be viable this year. The republicans have not been discussing it.
Cedar Falls Mayor Cruz presented a list of requests that could be handled by changing state law
to give more decision making power to local municipalities.
Cedar Falls Councilman Tabor encouraged the panel to support Cedar Valley Alliance.
Mayor Clark asked if any changes in TIF will be brought up and the answer was none are
needed.
Mr. Schmitt questioned what local municipalities, counties, and school districts could do to work
together and become more efficient.
Mr. Morrissey asked for support to provide tax credits for homeowners who are required to fix
footing drains and for stricter payday lender limits on interest rates.
Mr. Hart also asked for support to include commercial properties in the 657 process. He also
asked that non-profit organizations be given some training and guidance rather than losing
funding when they make errors.
With no further business before the Council, it was moved by Hart, seconded by Morrissey that
the meeting be adjourned at 4:46 p.m. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried.
