ORAL PRESENTATIONS
106966 - Kary Kurtz, Waterloo, is informing the council of an incident which occurred this
weekend at the city pool with regard to private pool parties. This weekend she took
her grandchild to Byrnes pool along with some of her friends for a birthday party.
Upon arriving at the pool, staff notified her that a minimum of fifteen must be at
the pool for it to open. After other swimmers arrived, they tried to gain access
to the pool and were then told that the pool was closed for a private party. She
spoke of the injustice of closing a public pool supported by tax dollars to allow
private parties. She feels taxes pay for the pools so it should be available for
all members of the public and the council should direct the use of funds by the
Recreation Commission. Hours for public use are posted and should be adhered to.
Private parties could be allowed after posted public hours.
Recreation Director Tom Reardon responded that the private pool parties are ways to
raise additional revenue for the swimming pools during periods when public
attendance is traditionally low. The policy is that whenever one pool has a party
scheduled the other city pool will remain open for public use. He agreed to change
the manner in which hours for public use are posted so that the schedule of private
parties is not in conflict with posted hours.
