ORAL PRESENTATIONS
91141 - Mayor McKinley presented a Certificate of Recognition to the Proud Image
singing group for recently taking first place in the Regional Finals Barber
Shop Group competition. McKinley stated that they will be going on to
represent a five state area in the International Competition later this year
in San Antonio, Texas.
In response Proud Image did two songs to show their appreciation for the
Certificate of Recognition.
Frank Mollenhoff, Chairman of the Mayor's Drug Task Force, read an annual
summary report of that Task Force. Mollenhoff reported that the Task Force
began with "D Day on Drugs" being declared on Tuesday, November 18, 1986, a
day that the church bells rang and the Mayor's office proclaimed throughout
the City that it was time to become indignant to the situation facing the
nation regarding drugs and alcohol abuse. Mollenhoff read the Mission
Statement, which is stated as follows: "To provide for a public forum in our
community dealing with the ravage and substance abuse through the criminal
justice process and the continuing of education prevention, intervention,
rehabilitation and recovery." Mollenhoff stated that he appreciated all of
the support he has received, especially through the Mayor's office and
through the local media. Mollenhoff continued that this Wednesday, October
21, 1987, the Task Force will be having a Work Session addressing the
planning of a second "D Day on Drugs" scheduled for Wednesday, November 18,
1987, a day that church bells will again ring, but this year being heard by a
more informed and knowledgeable public. A public that is agreeing that it is
time to rid our community of substance abuse in any form.
Jim Gano, 1148 Lincoln, approached the Council on a proposal to fly a POW -MIA
flag on the City Hall flagpole on behalf of the solders still missing in
Southeast Asia. Gano continued that there is still presently 2,477
unaccounted for American soldiers reported as prisoners of war or missing in
action from the Vietnam War, and that the citizens of Waterloo need to do
something. Gano stated that this is not a military problem but a personal
problem.
